Plot Recap: Minako has decided to undergo surgery after all. She reached this decision after watching Makoto pay the price for the mindset Minako is in and after realising that Minako is not a lesser person to Venus and her life as Minako is worth living.
Usagi is still being kept out of the loop of everything, even though this is something that makes her visibly unhappy and at least one of the senshi isn’t happy about this.
Also Mio kidnapped Rei and took her to the Dark Kingdom because Reasons and Rei learned something from Mamoru and Mamoru is almost entirely dead because of that stone inside him. Oh, and Jadeite tried to kill Rei, but Mamoru didn’t want anything to do with that.
Minako the prankster. We haven’t seen that side of her in ages. I’m glad she’s so happy about that surgery now that she’s finally decided to go through with it. Although that little rollercoaster flashback and the way the light’s blinding you as she walks away… I don’t trust it.
It’s a previous day flashback! *tries to bite her nails, but keeps them too short to succeed* But yay parties! I wholly approve of the senshi having small parties with one another.
Not good. I think I missed this the first time, but they’re actually really hinting at trouble.
I HAVE A THOUGHT. Actually, I have many, but this one is so silly that I want to share it. What if Metallia is someone who had a crystal like the ginzuishou only it got corrupted. If Usagi could become like Metallia like Ami is saying then maybe that’s a possibility yes? (In case it’s not obvious to anyone yet, I really like coming up with silly and wild theories.)
LOOK AT HOW IT’S HINTING AT BAD STUFF HAPPENING. The sound slows all down and goes away until you really hear the door closing and there is fading away and I DON’T LIKE THIS EPISODE MAKE IT END WELL.
Why does Metallia want to destroy the earth anyway? I feel like this is a question I should have asked ages ago, but I didn’t and so I am asking now. Also can we go back to Minako now?
Oh, Nephrite got his powers back? That’s new. I do like that he wants to return to the home he’s known. Awww, he still has the money that Motoki gave him and Motoki is now teasing him about Ami.
LOOK MOTOKI AND MAKOTO ARE HAVING A CONVERSATION THAT ISN’T AWKWARD CUTE. IT’S JUST CUTE. I forgive her for interrupting Nephrite and Motoki discussing what Motoki won’t understand if Nephrite won’t try to explain.
I TOLD YOU THIS WAS HINTING AT BAD THINGS I TOLD YOU I TOLD YOU MAKE IT GO AWAY CAN WE ERASE THIS EPISODE AND HAVE A DO-OVER? Please? Pretty please?
Yay, Usagi having fun!
Nononononono. The last time the show went all black-and-white was when Zoisite died. WHEN HE DIED. Shoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember when I first watched this episode and I didn’t know what was coming here. I’ve tried to give you as much of an approximation to my initial reaction, if only to try and keep some of the suspense going. I was really, really shocked by this episode the first time around. It’s a Sailor Moon adaptation. It doesn’t kill its senshi.
Well, okay, fine. It does. They die multiple times in various formats, but they a) always come back to life, b) die in the line of duty and never because they were sick, c) Minako is one of the protagonists and you don’t kill off your protagonists permanently and certainly not before the finale of the entire season, not when it’s not a death in preparation of the final boss encounter.
MY POINT STANDS. It was gutsy then and it’s gutsy now and the main difference I’ve noticed is that in knowing Minako was going to die in this episode is that I could notice the build-up to it and I can look back at past self and go “Oh, self. How did you not notice this?” because they’re laying on the foreshadowing really really thickly.
Aaand we’ve reached the point of no return on the Destroying the Planet thing. GUESS WHOSE FAULT IT’S NOT. (If you’ve guessed “Usagi”, have a virtual cookie.) Also this would be a good time for Beryl to say “Screw it” and work with the senshi to stop Metallia, but that probably won’t happen.
WTF. Did Mamoru just attack Beryl with a sword? *looks at screen, looks at it again* He did!
Yes, and whose fault is it that he’s such a husk of what he was before, Beryl? (I’ll give you a hint. It’s not Usagi and her name starts with a B.)
You know, Mamoru, I think Beryl covered most of the flaws in your plan already. Here’s anothing: IT’S A STUPID IDEA. No wonder you lost the war in the past life if this is your idea of a good strategy.
Oh, hey, it’s Kunzite! He’s bleeding light from where he stabbed himself to get rid of Beryl’s influence. Maybe he’s not as smart as I thought he was either if he didn’t think to bring and/or prepare any bandages for his aftercare when his whole idea to free himself hinged on stabbing himself in the gut. I’d have prepared some bandages to take with me and use. Watch the show now prove this entire paragraph moot within the next half a minute of episode.
Huh. It didn’t yet. Not-really-a-spoiler-alert: I have no recollection of what happens to Kunzite or what’s going on with Endymion attacking Metallia. Also look, it’s night time again.
So… Let’s see. Kunzite, Endymion and Zoisite can all vanish with a swish of their cloak, but… Jadeite can’t? I can’t recall if Nephrite could do that or not. If he can’t, maybe it’s a cloak-length thing? Like Jadeite and Nephrite can’t and couldn’t because their cloak isn’t long enough? But then Mio can do it anyway and she’s not even wearing a cloak in the first place.
Awww, the youma protected Jadeite and Makoto is crying out to him like he’s an ally she’s trying to stop from doing something foolish.
Rei is… really really out of it. She looks really shocked and like she’s not entirely there. Not surprising since she’s the first senshi to know that Venus died.
Rei is kind of expressing what I was feeling when I got to this point the first time I watched it. Except with more anger and more fireballs. Can I note that by her own admission Rei didn’t even like Minako very much and she’s tearing up over Minako’s death? Like, she’s single-handedly defeating a youma specifically created to release and deal with Metallia’s powers because she’s upset at the entire world over the death of a person she supposedly doesn’t even get along with. That is a seriously, seriously strong reaction for someone you supposedly don’t even like having died. (Death is horrible and it really fucking hurts to lose someone and we know Rei acts tough and bitchy when, really, she’s hiding how she actually cares very deeply about a lot of things possibly because she doesn’t want to be hurt, but still. She spent all this show claiming to dislike Venus and getting into fights with her about how to lead and what was important.)
Why is my face wet? (No, don’t answer that. I’ll rephrase. Why am I crying? I KNOW THIS EPISODE. I KNEW THIS WAS HAPPENING. I WAS PREPARED FOR THIS. I spent all this rewatch not getting attached to Minako as a character because I knew she was going to die and now Mars is throwing all her hurt and pain at the loss into fighting that youma and now that the youma is defeated she is crashing hard and MY FACE IS ALL WET. T_T
Question: Can anyone imagine Rei reacting this strongly to losing any of the other senshi? Because I can’t make up my mind.
The farewell party they should have had? This is the farewell party they should have had? MY FACE IS STILL WET AND SPLOTCHY AND MY NOSE IS RUNNY WHY AM I CRYING I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY I AM DOING THE CRYING HOW DID THIS SHOW GET TO ME THIS MUCH AGAIN?!
Question (yes again): Why is Rei the only one of the senshi who is a complete and utter wreck? Oh, there we go. Usagi is now crying too. (I AM STILL CRYING I HAVE TISSUES AND I’M NOT AFRAID TO USE THEM.)
STILL CRYING. Can I pretend this episode does not exist and Minako is still alive? She’s just pranking everyone and making me really hate her leadership skills? Please, can I? Can we have Minako back in the next episode?
WHY AM I WATCHING THIS SHOW AGAIN? I HATE THIS SHOW IT MAKES ME CRY.
Also, we’re two episodes away from the grand finale. AND MINAKO DIED. And part of my wants to shout that it was a pointless death because of the whole “Did not die fighting the big bad” narrative and such, but it wasn’t pointless. Not really. She died because she decided that her life as Minako was valuable and, if you want to look at it from past life/reincarnation plot point, then maybe she learned what she needed to learn. Or something. It just… it’s easy to say it’s pointless because it doesn’t fit with the narrative that senshi only die when fighting the final season’s youma (and they’ll get resurrected anyway), but I really don’t think it is. All of Minako’s storyarc was about her accepting that her life as Minako has value and it’s worth living that life. Her deciding on the surgery is her finally accepting that her life as Minako has that even regardless of her past life or her mission or anything. The outcome of the surgery is heartbreaking, but the point is that she took that risk with her life as Minako because Minako.
(Also drama. Tension. Who kills one of their main characters right before the grand finale? That’s when you need everyone at their strongest! Not starting the fight with one team member down and everyone bowed low with grief.)
See you next time!
