List of Prominent Characters

So, the NL and EN tags are the ones actually used in the story. If it’s listed for both then it’s a shorthand I’m using to note which of the characters is which. Where no name for ‘both’ is included I haven’t used a name for both. (Expect this list to get updated per chapter!)

Whoever is born here, is doomed to stay ’til death. Whoever settles, never leaves.

Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children’s bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

The elders of Black Spring have virtually quarantined the town by using high-tech surveillance to prevent their curse from spreading. Frustrated with being kept in lockdown, the town’s teenagers decide to break their strict regulations and go viral with the haunting. But, in so doing, they send the town spiraling into dark, medieval practices of the distant past.

In chapter 26: We briefly get a look at the state of minds of Gemelda and Grim. Also apparently Maxmatt has temporarily woken up to shout a warning and then went back into his comatose/catatonic state.

Chapter 27 – Scene 1

Uuuuuuugh. Ste is all alone with his grief (which is fine), but he’s also all “TIY, COME BACK I WOULD GIVE ANYTHING” and, okay, fair enough, but. Like. He also has his wife and youngest son to think about too and he’s just all about Tiy and no matter how many times I tell myself that this is a legitimate and real way for people to react to what’s happened to Ste, I just… get annoyed at how incredibly self-centred it is. Not so much Ste himself, but the narrative surrounding it. It’s just all about Ste and his manpain and who cares about anyone else and, like, I would prefer it if that was clearly marked as a part of Ste’s personality and his thoughts and not so much as part of the narrative’s overall tone.

Anyway. He is currently angry and upset Lau will not leave him to grieve in peace and wanting to talk to him about how Tiy wouldn’t do this on his own and how he’s fessing up about the recording of the Witch’s whisperings. Well, he did ask Lau how he was doing. And Laurens is remarkably… informal, given the circumstances, and using informal!you instead of formal!you. That’s… kind of a matter of choice, somewhat? Like there’s nothing wrong about Laurens addressing his bestie’s father with it in any context, but since it’s so close after the funeral and they’re both otherwise a bit unsure of themselves, I’d just expected the formal!you is all. It’d have added to how surreal the whole situation is for me.

And Ste is now all “It is my fault my son is dead!” because if he hadn’t made Tiy shut down OYE and protected his son from the council then maybe Jaymer wouldn’t have taken revenge by playing the recording and, you know, it is clearly all Ste’s fault.

Also, we learn that the password to Tiy’s computer is his dad’s date of birth because they’re just that close. And I have no idea why Lau even knows that, but there you are.

Chapter 27 – Scene 2

And we’re gone for a scene switch and it takes the narrative entirely too long to give me a clue about exactly who is being sick. It’s Ste, if you’re curious, but since it’s a new scene it could also have been Grim. We don’t know because the scene doesn’t establish this for the next 100 words or so. Which is confusing since when the scene switches there’s no guarantee that the characters will stay the same and it helps to note this as early as possible. Which is not this late into the scene.

Anyway, Ste is physically unwell, which isn’t actually the first time we’ve seen him affected by his son’s death, but is definitely the first time we’ve had some graphic look at his behaviour following said death, and it’s much better at showing us how messed up he is.

Also, Ste’s birthday is indeed totally Tiy’s password of choice. And he finds something. Ooooooooooh. So creeeeeeepyyyyy.

Chapter 27 – Scene 3

This is basically Ste’s reaction to the video that Tiy and Lau shot when they were out looking for the mysterious dog that sounded like theirs but couldn’t be because their dog was dead. And also this is basically where Ste, who is apparently a rational academic who does not believe in witches or magic, starts believing in witches and magic because he’s just that desperate to believe his son can be brought back to life.

Chapter 27 – Scene 4

And this is basically stuff getting weirder and more foreboding as Ste is sick some more (and throws up owl pellets of his son’s hair) and begs the Wyler Witch to return his son to life. ‘cause she’s done so for her own son in years past, after all.

And… Like, remember how Maxmatt woke up and shouted about a dude cutting open the Wyler Witch’s eyes and how his dad should stop that from happening? Like I’m pretty sure this is supposed to be all foreboding about how his dad is totally going to be the one to do that and I just… cannot find it within me to be worried about this. I am that terrified of what is happening.
