It is time! After a good rest, I have collected last night’s livetweet into a new Storify!
This week I’ve livetweeted Overture of Last Dracul, or more accurately New/Transformation – The Path to Become the Super Warrior – Overture of Last Dracul and if that sounds like it’s a remake of a first stage musical you would be absolutely correct!
This musical is exactly like 1995’s Transformation – The Path to Become the Super Warrior except the Death Busters have been replaced by Death Nightmares, Tomoe… sort-of exists but is replaced by Berserk, Pharaoh 90 has been replaced with Death Vulcan, Mistress 9 does not exist, and oh there are vampires.
Sadly, what this remake does not do is replace the Mannetjes with something that is actually funny and not something that comes off as very casually transphobic to be funny. (I really, really don’t like them. Let’s just leave it at that.)
It’s also the first musical to star Miyuki Kanbe as Sailor Moon. She is so energetic and earnest. It’s really sweet, though last night I was way too tired to really appreciate the energy and enthusiasm she has for the role because wow just WATCHING her was making me even more tired. T_T
As for the musical as a whole, it’s not my favourite. I like the idea of Sailor Moon Meets Vampires, in theory, but the fact that this is basically a remake of what is probably my least favourite Myu because it made no sense whatsoever with yet more elements that need to be explained and properly set up and aren’t really hurt my enjoyment. T_T
They’ve got this really, really interesting vibe going on with Dracul about light and dark and what’s right and wrong and who is actually cursed, humans or vampires, on top of this sad personal story about a vampire who’s lost his wife (she died before he could turn her into a vampire) and is estranged from his (half-human) daughter because she apparently hates him for making her a dhampir and it barely gets explored and. Just.
Ugh. This narrative with Dracul had SO MUCH potential and it’s all just kind of… not utilised. And, like, it could’ve been a really, really good wholly original Myu musical that I loved even more than The Legend of Kaguya Island, but they’re just reusing a plot that never really worked in the first place and cramming the new elements into it.
For example: At some point, Neptune and Uranus show up and get to sing their introduction song, yes? But no one changed the lyrics, so they’re there singing about how they’re looking for the talismans (well, the third) even though we’ve already seen that Pluto is a member of the team and they already have the third Talisman.
Another example: On day 1, the senshi meet a new enemy (who is specifically targetting Chibiusa), yes? On day 2, they’re all meeting up to go “Imma follow my dreams to go abroad. I can’t protect Usagi anymore”. I’m just going to leave that there a moment. Let it sink in.
Now add that, at the start of the musical, Usagi had nightmares about the senshi leaving her because Death Lamia caused them and there’s enough talk about curses and such that it is actually easy to interpret the whole scene as “The senshi are not acting like themselves because curse that needs to be broken”, but I don’t think it really did that or used that strand enough to make this scene work. It’s just “Oh, we’re remaking this musical, so we need to keep this scene that was key to Usagi’s character arc”.
And wow I have a lot to say apparently, but. Just. THE PLOT OF THIS MUSICAL WAS SUCH A HOT MESS AND THE BEST PART WAS WHEN URANUS TRIED TO FIGHT NEPTUNE BECAUSE MY HEART CANNOT TAKE THIS LOVERS-TURNED-ENEMIES. T_T
And, like, there were scenes I loved. Individual scenes that were these really emotional and powerful moments like what I just mentioned that would have gutted me if they’d worked how they were supposed to. But they didn’t because the narrative in the scenes around them was horrid and weird and just plain didn’t make any sense whatsoever because this is, like, the first totally unrevised draft of a pantser writer. AND I SAY THIS AS A PANTSER.
I’m just so frustrated. I always had the impression that the Dracul musicals were considered to be some of the original Myus best musicals and this one is just… not. So I really really hope that the next two will be a lot better.
Next week, it’s the second Dracul musical: Decisive Battle / Transylvania’s Forest ~ New Appearance! The Warriors Who Protect Chibi Moon ~. It certainly sounds interesting!
