Goal Review May 2018

Last Month's GoalI Want to Read:

  • Mindline by M.C.A. Hogarth
  • Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
  • The Riddle of the Wren by Charles de Lint

I Want to Write:

  • 5,000 words of fiction

Uh… I read… 1 book on the list? I did start in the second, but apparently I spent most of this month reading ebooks. Which is… what this month’s choices were supposed to prevent. Oops. Unless I finish Monstrous Regiment before the end of the day (tempting, actually), May will also mark the first month where I’m reading single digits this month. Well, unless I count my text books which will just confuse my numbers, so let’s not.

I’ll have read either 10 or 9 books by the end of today. One of them was a chunkster, The Poppy War, which I will eventually learn how to spell on the first try. It’s also one of the few books I genuinely enjoyed this month, though ‘enjoy’ is… not exactly the word I’d use to describe The Poppy War. I mean it makes grimdark look like puppies and rainbows. This undoubtedly added to my general feelings about reading this month. I still read about 2 books a week, though!

And I did, however, write a bunch. I wrote almost 30,000 words this month! :O

Wait, what?

This is, largely, because I finished the Ace and Aro Tropes essay and that one clocks in at about 8,000-something words. I’d have to doublecheck. With quotes the full thing was 9,500 words, though. So without that we’re still looking at a pretty healthy number. Mainly this is because Thrushbeard’s protagonists are pretty chatty, I think. I’ll start and suddenly I’m 1,000 words into a poem and get to go back and see if there’s a nicer breaking point somewhere sooner. Oh dear.

So that is actually going surprisingly well.

Studying is also happening, although depression, website issues and the heat wave in May made it take a bit of a hit. 🙁 It goes apace, though. Whoo!

And that’s all that’s been going on for May.

This Week on Patreon (Week 22)

My Patreon tends to be a fairly quiet place, but I wanted to share the posts that go up every week. In this case, I’m counting weeks from Saturday to Friday so anyone who wants to explore things during the weekend can do so.

While most of my posts are locked to patrons, a lot of them will release to the public and get cross-posted to this website after a month as well. Those’ll be indicated with a little asterisk (*) behind them. It may not always be exactly a month because, for the sake of my poor brain, I’m counting a month as “that same number in the next month, except the 31st gets moved to the 30th”. Sometimes posts may also be posted simultaneously for everyone to read and sometimes posts may go up earlier because reasons that will be explained in that post.

I strive to find a balance between offering up a good amount of content to everyone for free, which Patrons get to experience a month before everyone else, and interesting extra content exclusive to Patrons. I hope you’ll find something interesting among the posts this week! Enjoy!

Site changes, blog changes, and Patreon updates

Firstly, you can read more details on the Patreon changes here, but they have some reprecussions for this site and blog as well and it’s high time I actually talked about them properly.

The very short version is: I’m burnt out on book talk posts, having to consider them reviews and just, generally speaking, feeling pressured (by myself) to provide a lot of posts in order to provide continuous content. So, effective immediately, I will cease writing reviews. You won’t notice this until several months from now when I run out of scheduled posts, but it is happening.

After much deliberation, I’ve decided that the ones I’d scheduled beforehand will go up as scheduled, but after that I’ll add “make significant changes to the blog structure” to the list of things on my To Do list. By then I’ll have a good idea of how the rest of the changes impact everything and what the most sensible way to restructure is.

In addition to being burnt out on reviews, I also find that I vastly prefer to analyse books and ace and aro representation in a more essay-style format and I’d like to shift from these reviews to something longer and more detailed. That said, due to the increase in time, effort and money these take me, I won’t be offering them for free until we reach a milestone threshold on Patreon. When we do, I’ll start reposting them publicly here. This is also part of why I want/need to restructure the website here because I want people to be able to find these easily.

Beyond that, though, I really want to try to be more diligent about cross-posting from Patreon to here and to promote the Patreon posts more than once a week or a few times per month. Yes, it’s nice that WordPress lets me post to Twitter automatically, but it’s annoying to readers if they have to click through another link to actually get at the content. That doesn’t mean the round-ups are going away! I find them useful. It just means I want to do more than the round-ups.

These changes mean that the blog is shifting over into more of a news and updates section than a blog as such. Not that I’m very good at general blogging anyway.

Basically, what I’m aiming for is to produce less but imo far higher-quality content and to have more time for writing fiction instead of having so much of my brain space dedicated to book discussions masquerading as reviews.

I will, undoubtedly, find some other way to keep chatting about narratives I consume because I like talking about stories and I’m not changing the goals posts. I don’t always tick off all the items on it, but I find them fun and helpful. I’m just changing up everything else. Hopefully for the better!

Thank you for reading all of this! You can read more details about my essay-writing plans on Patreon if you’re curious about the nitty-gritty of what I’m planning there.

Sale!

#mermay Sale: Sea Foam and Silence & A Harmony of Water and Weald on sale for $0.99 each! Bonus sale of A Promise Broken!

In honour of #mermay (and to prove that do, sometimes, know how to market things in a relatively timely fashion), Sea Foam and Silence and A Harmony of Water and Weald are both on sale until the end of May for $0.99 each! With bonus sale of A Promise Broken (also 99 cents) because it’s a seaside setting and a nice summery book for those of us in the northern hemisphere. Snap it up now as part of your summer reading preparations!

Sea Foam and Silence is my queer Little Mermaid verse novel retelling and A Harmony of Water and Weald is a short companion collection. You can read A Harmony of Water and Weald on its own, but I don’t recommend it.

A Promise Broken is my island slice-of-life fantasy about Eiryn, a young precious cinnamon roll, dealing with grief and bullying. Also her aroace uncle who just… isn’t good with children, but he tries really really hard. Also the community surrounding them.

You can snap them up supercheaply until the end of May. :O :O :O

May 2018 Goals

This Month's Goals
I Want to Read:

  • Mindline by M.C.A. Hogarth
  • Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
  • The Riddle of the Wren by Charles de Lint

I Want to Write:

  • 5,000 words of fiction

Honestly, what I want to do most this month and probably next month is throw myself into the course I’m taking. It’s proving to be more challenging than I’d expected and I just really, really don’t want to try and juggle everything all at once whilst feeling pressured by myself to do so. So I’m dedicating the next few months to studying and any writing will fit around that.

And that’s… honestly all I have to say. I’m not expecting to publish DemiPrincess2 until late 2018 and I’m well on track for my writing projects later this year. I can afford to chip away at them more slowly for a while. The monthly short stories I’m writing for Patreon still have a couple of months of work scheduled, so I can afford to chip away at those more slowly too, though I want to take this reduced focus on writing for a few months as an opportunity to practice flash fiction and micro poetry some more. I’ve always really enjoyed them and I miss finding them relatively easy to write (as opposed to utterly impossible).

Not to mention that DemiPrincess1, Among the Glimmering Flowers releases in less than two months. I need to work on the marketing for that far more than I have as well. (I, uh, fail at marketing my own books still?) So this temporary shift is a good thing in a lot of way and we’ll just have to see what the months bring!

I expect to find most of my writing focus to lie on nonfiction as I wrap up the examples for the tropes essays and anything else should it come my way. As always, I aim to take it one day at a time. (Well, no. I actually have a schedule for all my studying mostly worked out, so there’s that, but writingwise…) Onwards, into May and whatever goodies it brings! 😀
