Book Talk: Help WantedHelp Wanted by J. Emery
Series: Ashveil Academy #1
Pages: 60

Em is confused about a lot of things: who she is, what she wants, how she’s going to pass Alchemy when she’s awful at it. The one thing she’s not confused about is how much she wants to buy her best friend (and college roommate) the best birthday present ever. Luckily the local magic supply shop is hiring.

Her plan to get a job there would be working perfectly if not for her coworker Phineas who is in turns aggravating and endearingly awkward. She’s not sure if she wants to date him or wants to be him. The more time they spend together the more she thinks it may be both.

Help Wanted is an 18,000 word novella with a gender and sexuality questioning f/m romance. It is the first in a new series about students at a contemporary magic college.

Surprise book talk time! Today I’m talking about Help Wanted by J. Emery. I was going to do a proper ramble, but my equipment wasn’t cooperating (read: the ground loop is back and this time it’s so bad my voice gets eaten by the noise reduction too). So a good old-fashioned written talk it is!

CW: descriptions of gender dysphoria

Disclaimer: J. is a twitter friend of mine and I received a copy of this novella for a review.

Goal Review July 2018

Last Month's Goal

I Want to Read:

  • The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley
  • A Slip of the Keyboard by Terry Pratchett
  • The Art of Language Invention by David J. Peterson

I Want to Write:

  • The Essay With All The Numbers Draft 7 (or so) ✔
  • 2,500 words of fiction ✔

Well, that worked spectacularly well this month! Reading-wise, my goal, um, floundered spectacularly. I did read over 10 books, officially meeting my goal of 100 books for the year this month, although I have a few more stories to go before I read it on GoodReads. It’s an issue with reading material GR doesn’t classify as books (yet).

This all failed spectacularly – I haven’t even touched any of those three – largely because I spent the first half of the month revising that essay – hopefully for the better! – and I just… wow, no. I absolutely did not want to read more nonfiction than what I was already drafting. So I wound up reading none of them. Oops.

I did write a fair amount, though. I wrote… almost 11,000 words of fiction this month? And wrapped up Thrushbeard‘s first draft! Wow, that was so much longer than I was expecting it to be. Honestly, though, I lost… a week to the heatwave? There was at least a week where I just did not have the energy to do anything, even read, because it was too hot to do anything other than flop and keep hydrated.

So… All in all, while I failed my reading goals spectacularly, it’s not been a bad month at all. Now I get to play catch up on everything I’ve missed in that heatwave week. Whoo!

This Week on Patreon (Week 29)

(This week’s round-up is a little late thanks to the fact that I spent the past two or three days mostly asleep and generally in pain. Turns out, proper medication to deal with menstruation cramps is rather important to my ability to function. Have to say, I did not need the reminder.)

My Patreon tends to be a fairly quiet place, but I wanted to share the posts that go up every week. In this case, I’m counting weeks from Saturday to Friday so anyone who wants to explore things during the weekend can do so.

While most of my posts are locked to patrons, a lot of them will release to the public and get cross-posted to this website after a month as well. Those’ll be indicated with a little asterisk (*) behind them. It may not always be exactly a month because, for the sake of my poor brain, I’m counting a month as “that same number in the next month, except the 31st gets moved to the 30th”. Sometimes posts may also be posted simultaneously for everyone to read and sometimes posts may go up earlier because reasons that will be explained in that post.

I strive to find a balance between offering up a good amount of content to everyone for free, which Patrons get to experience a month before everyone else, and interesting extra content exclusive to Patrons. I hope you’ll find something interesting among the posts this week! Enjoy!

This Month's Goals
I Want to Read:

  • The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley
  • A Slip of the Keyboard by Terry Pratchett
  • The Art of Language Invention by David J. Peterson

I Want to Write:

  • The Essay With All The Numbers Draft 7 (or so)
  • 2,500 words of fiction

I asked a good friend of mine to select this month’s reads from my immediate remaining TBR pile. I did not expect to end up with two nonfiction books, but here we are. I’m actually looking forward to them, but I expect this month’s reading to be a slightly tougher challenge than the other months. The Mirror Empire is a chunkster and I’m a slow nonfiction reader at the best of times. We’ll see how it goes.

Writing-wise, I’ll be focusing the month on redrafting an essay which will, hopefully, come out later this month. I’m superexcited about sharing it with you all and I’ve been so honoured and humbled by Ana and Thea working with me to make it sparkle its brightest. 😀 That shouldn’t actually take all month – ideally I’d like it done in the first week – but you never know. I’m not taking chances. This is what I’m working on this month and everything else is a bonus.

Except I do want a tiny bit of fiction writing because fiction is good for me. 😀 And that’s what I’m planning for next month. A looooot of nonfiction. 😀
